To me – this room holds a transitional space for the work of therapy to unfold and evolve
To me – this room provides both nourishment and comfort yet can hold great pain and distress
To me – these walls create a barrier of safety from the outside world
To me – it’s a place to share, to bear witness to, and to nurture fragility
To me – this is a space which offers opportunities for a new story to be told and shared together
I am very conscious that therapeutic spaces will mean different things to different people. This would make sense. No two people will ever have experienced the world in one particular way. The room can be important, but it is not the room alone that can encourage shifts and engender movements. The therapeutic frame and my professional relationship with my client, all support the holding of the material, both gently and safely.
Engaging in therapy and working in the room, can provide:
Safety and Comfort: A space where you feel heard, accepted and supported, which is free from judgment
Personal Growth: A room where you’re able to confront difficult emotions, explore past experiences, and ultimately move towards an unfiltered view of yourself and others
A Pause or Escape: For some, therapy can feel like a break from the stresses and strains of everyday life; it can provide a space and a time to focus solely on your own well-being
A Connection with a Therapist: a professional guide and working companion, who is there to help you navigate your emotional world, often at a challenging time in your life
A Place for Change: The therapy room may also become a symbol of transformation – a place where you are able to take the first tentative steps towards reflecting upon past and ongoing circumstances
To me – this is ultimately an extraordinary space, in which I can be curious about my client’s experiences’. It offers an opportunity for support with whatever has been brought into, on the face of it, a rather ordinary room.
